1. Robin (Erithacus rubecula)
Red breasted Robins are one of the UKs most iconic birds & can be seen throughout the year pretty much anywhere. The male & female Robins look very similar making it hard to identify, you can identify a young Robin as it will not have a red breast & will instead have golden-brown spots. Robins are quite small birds with an approximate body size of 14cm & an average weight of 14-21g & their diet consists of worms, seeds, fruits & insects.

2. Blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus)
The Blue tit is a commonly found bird in the UK with a colourful mix of blue, yellow, green & white makes it an easy spot. This species tends to group up for the winter reaching numbers of up to & exceeding 20, they search for food in while in this group. Blue tits lay between 10 & 12 eggs in a single clutch & are often only able to lay a single clutch in a lifetime. Eggs are hatching around May when insects are in abundance meaning the parents can gather as much food as possible for their offspring.

The Wren is a small brown bird which can easily be identified by its raised narrow tail while perched & distinct loud chirp. The Wrens body is rounded with a narrow bill, long legs, long toes & sort stubby wings which makes it noticeably different from similar small birds. The Wren feeds on small insects such as caterpillars & spiders and can be found in a wide range of habitats including forests, farmland & heathlands.

4. Red Kite (Milvus milvus)
The Red Kite is an iconic bird which was recently saved from extinction after being re-introduced into England & Scotland under the Schedule 1 Wildlife & Countryside act starting back in 1989. The RSPB estimates that the UK now has 4,600 pairs in the wild as of 2022 after being declared extinct back in 1979.
The Red Kite has a distinct Red/brown body with a forked tail & angled wing with a span of up to 195cm. They have an approximate body length of 60-66cm & can weigh up to 1.3kg. Red kites are scavengers and often feed on carrion & worms but have been known to occasionally catch small mammals. Red Kites have now become a common sight around England circling fields, hedges & roads looking for their next meal.

8. Buzzard (Buteo buteo)
The Buzzard is a commonly found bird of prey found all over the UK, with a body size of around 50-60cm and a massive wingspan of 110-130cm they make an impressive sight. While in flights the buzzard looks very similar to its relative the Red Kite, you can easily identify a buzzard by its fanned tail (A kite has an arrow shaped tail wing). The Buzzard has a brown body with various lighter patterns on its chest and wings, it’s wing tips are generally dark.
Interesting trivia about this Buzzard is that it’s call has commonly been mistaken for a cat’s meow & and they are known to stomp their feet on the ground to attract worms.
